Almost 51 million people from the Horn of Africa are facing severe food insecurity and an estimated 146 million people in Sub Saharan Africa are hit with acute food insecurity. The hunger crisis in Africa has been widely confirmed as the worst food crisis in decades in Africa.
In response the International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement has launched a Hunger Crisis appeal. A hunger crisis coordination meeting with the 23 African National Societies, the ICRC and the IFRC, 13 partner National Societies National Societies highlighted ‘Community and Cash’ as significant themes in existing National Society response plans. From the meeting 14 Commitments and principles were set in A Nairobi Statement of 8th September 2022. One of the commitments was to “harness and mainstream cash-based interventions as transformational modality for emergency assistance and investment in durable development”. In view of this commitment all the 14 NS have Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) Modality in their country’s hunger crisis strategy and especially for basic needs and as multipurpose cash where markets and financial sector are functioning.
